Born in Africa. Called to Mother Differently

Celebration of an African Mom

On the 25th of May each year, the world celebrates Africa Day — a day that reminds us of our roots, our strength, and our shared journey as Africans. For many, it’s a time of cultural pride, reflection, and celebration.

But for me — a mother, a digital business coach, and the founder of AfriMom Club54 — Africa Day also reminds me of the silent promises I made to myself long ago:

👉🏽 That I would raise my children differently.
👉🏽 That I would build a business without losing myself.
👉🏽 That I would become the mother I never had.

This is a story about where I come from, what I lacked, and how that birthed something powerful — not just for me, but for hundreds of African women who are now part of a growing movement called AfriMom Club54.

Growing Up in Africa — Without the Anchor of Motherhood

I was born in Africa — on a continent rich in rhythm, resource, and resilience. But like many African daughters, my story wasn’t wrapped in the warmth of a mother’s embrace. My mom wasn’t present. And that absence shaped me in ways I didn’t fully understand until I became a mother myself.

There were moments I craved guidance, approval, softness — the kind that only a mother could give. But it wasn’t there. And so I grew up learning to be strong, to carry myself, and to find my voice without having someone hold my hand. I had to figure out a lot of things by myself and reading a lot.

It was tough.
But it planted a fire in me.

Not a fire of bitterness — but a fire of intention.
I knew that when my time came, I would do things differently. I would mother with presence. I would choose healing, not just for me — but for the generations coming after me.

From Brokenness to Boldness: How My Mother Wounds Became My Fuel

People often say, “Turn your pain into purpose.” And that’s exactly what happened.

When I became a mom, I realized motherhood wasn’t just about raising children — it was also about re-raising myself. Healing the parts of me that were abandoned. Becoming the mother I longed for.

But then came another challenge:
How could I show up fully for my children without losing the woman inside me?

I knew too many African women who had poured themselves out for their families and had nothing left for themselves — no dreams, no income, no identity beyond “mom.”

And that didn’t sit well with me.

I didn’t want to become resentful. I wanted more — not just for money, but for meaning.

So I chose the path of the Mompreneur — a woman who builds her business around her life, not the other way around. A woman who refuses to abandon her family or her calling.

And in that choice, I found my voice.
In that choice, AfriMom Club54 was born.

AfriMom Club54: A Movement for African Mothers with Vision

AfriMom Club54 isn’t just a Facebook group. It’s a sisterhood.
A place where mothers from all over Africa gather — not to vent or complain, but to grow. To learn. To build. To be seen.

We are:

💛 Mothers of toddlers, teens, and twenty-somethings.
💙 Women from South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Ghana, Uganda and beyond.
🤍 Dreamers, doers, and digital business builders.

What connects us is a shared desire to mother with intention while still pursuing the dreams God placed in our hearts.

We talk about real things —
🟡 The guilt of trying to balance motherhood and business.
🟡 The shame we’ve carried from not being “enough.”
🟡 The healing work of breaking generational patterns.
🟡 The joy of making our first online sale or showing up confidently on video.

We do it all in our own African context — not through generic advice from the West, but through culturally relevant, faith-filled, and community-centered mentorship.

Why iMatter — Especially in Africa

This year’s theme in my heart is simple but bold: iMatter.

It’s a personal declaration. A permission slip.
A reminder that I am not just a mother. I’m a woman. I’m a visionary. I carry purpose. And so do you.

Too many African women have been taught to shrink. To only live for others. To feel guilty for dreaming.

But in AfriMom Club54, we are rewriting that narrative.

✅ We are building digital businesses — coaching, selling, freelancing, launching products.
✅ We are learning social media, Canva, email marketing, and how to make money online.
✅ We are holding space for each other — crying, praying, encouraging, and celebrating. And we surely did this when we went for the iMatter Trip in South Africa.

Because when a woman knows she matters, she shows up differently.

She parents differently.
She loves differently.
She builds differently.

My Why: Raising Different Children While Honouring My Womanhood

I often say this:
“I call myself a Mompreneur because I believe moms can build real businesses without sacrificing their homes or their values.”

That’s not just a cute line — it’s my life.

I’m raising Jade (14), Joe (12), and Jammie (8) — three beautiful children who are watching their mom chase purpose with passion.

I don’t always get it right. There are late nights. Missed Zooms. Burnt toast.
But they know this:
Their mom is present. She is prayerful. And she is powerful.

They are growing up in a home where mom is not bitter, broke, or buried under duty.
They’re growing up in a home where dreams are discussed over dinner.
Where healing is practiced daily.
Where they can see firsthand that a woman can lead and be led with grace.

Where they are within a happy marriage , a whole family unit.

Africa Day Is Personal

So, when Africa Day comes around each year, I don’t just post flags and slogans.

I pause to reflect:
What kind of Africa are we building — not just for ourselves, but for the generations watching?

And my answer is always this:
We’re building an Africa where women no longer live on the sidelines of their own lives.

We’re building homes where children see their moms show up boldly — not just in the kitchen, but in the boardroom, on Zoom, on Instagram, and in business.

We’re building a continent where healed mothers raise whole children — children who don’t have to recover from their upbringing.
